Belize | Belize City

Belize City is the arrival point of all International flights into Belize. It merely serves as a jump-off
point to the rest of Belize. There is only one area of town that is a walled and guarded area that is
safe for tourist or visitors to Belize. Belize City has the majority of all of the crime incidencses
in the entire country of Belize. It is best to only land in the ariport in Belize City and take one of
the countries small commuter (Tropic Air or Mayan Air) planes to your destination in Belize.
There are also buses that can safely carry you to any part of Belize you wish to visit.

Cayo

Cayo Districts most important industry is ecotourism. Besides the country's most extensive number of
Archeological Sites and a growing number of comfortable accommodations, Cayo offers visitors the
unique opportunity to encounter its physically diverse flora and fauna, with such natural wonders as
cascading waterfalls and limestone caves in an intact and relatively undisturbed environment.
In fact over 60% of Cayo District has been set aside as either a Wildlife Sanctuary, National Park,
or Forest Reserve.

Corozal

Corozal Town, situated alongside beautiful Corozal Bay, is the northern most town in Belize.
Corozal is located nine miles from the Mexican border and Chetumal, capital of Mexico's Quintana Roo.
With a population of around 10,000 residents, the town is situated between two scenic rivers, the New
River and Rio Hondo, about 85 miles North of Belize City.

Orange Walk

situated on the New River and Northern Highway. The second of the northern districts, Orange Walk
lies next to both Mexico and Guatemala; although it does not have an official border crossing into either.
The town is a mix of Spanish, Maya, East Indians, visiting Mennonites and Chinese. Mexican influences
remain strong. Orange Walk is also important for its production of dairy products, citrus fruits, beef
and rum production.

Stan Creek

Stann Creek is Belize's second largest district with 986 square miles of possibilities for the adventure
inclined traveler. The coast is dotted with small towns and fishing villages that offer cultural flavors
in exotic combination, and access to crowd free cayes as well as the remote reaches of the Belize Barrier Reef.
Beginning just a few miles inland, the territory hosts Maya villages, the world's first jaguar preserve,
a wealth of tropical forests, and a good portion of the Maya Mountains including Victoria Peak. Dangriga is
Stann Creek's largest city with connections to the village of Hopkins which is an up-and-coming area of Belize.

Toledo

Toledo is Belize's southern most district. The Toledo district is bordered to the west and south by Guatemala.
Its terrain ranges from coastal swamp to rocky hills. It is very rainy and prone to floods. Land developed for
agricultural purposes is mostly for rice and banana production. Toledo is strewn with small villages that rely
on subsistence farming. The residents of Toledo are mostly Mayan Indians who are direct descendants of the great
Mayan civilization which collapsed several hundred years ago.

Belize Outer-Islands & Atolls

Turneffe

Belize’s Turneffe Atoll is the largest and most biologically diverse coral atoll in the Caribbean. Its diversity
of marine habitats creates one of the most productive and ecologically sensitive marine ecosystems in
the Hemisphere. Turneffe is also know as one of the best light tackle and fly fishing Belize Flats Fishing
grounds in the world. More records have been set in Turneffe Flats than any other Belize Fishing destination.

Glovers Reef

Thirty six miles offshore of the Belize mainland lie a group of tropical islands cradled within a turquoise lagoon
and surrounded by a living coral reef. Glover's Reef Atoll is considered to be one of the richest tropical marine
environments in the entire Caribbean. Glover's Reef was named after the pirate John Glover who used this remote
ring of islands and coral reefs as a base from which to raid Spanish merchant ships. In 1993, the atoll was
declared a marine park, and 25% of the area and lagoon was protected from fishing and harvesting. To continue
the conservation efforts to preserve this extraordinary environment, the site was designated as a
World Heritage Site, in 1996.

Light House Reef

Of the three atoll reefs off the coast of Belize, Lighthouse Reef is the farthest offshore. It is far from neglected,
however, since dive boats from San Pedro visit the atoll regularly and the larger live-aboard vessels are always found
in the vicinity. This also teh site for the world famous Belize Diving site called "The Blue Hole". This amazing natural
dive site is known world wide by all scuba divers and is a divers goal to make it to Belize to dive the Blue Hole at
at least once in a divers underwater career.
